Owned and operated by two French musicians and long-time Brooklyn residents, Barbès functions as a neighborhood community center of sorts.

Much like the neighborhood it is named after, Barbès puts the stress on cultural variety, neighborhood conviviality – and bargain hunting , with $6 Ricard and an eclectic music collection which ranges from the Lebanese diva Asmahan to Mexican bandas, Venezuelan joropos and Romanian brass bands.

Barbès has one of the best selection of Single Malt Scotch in the city as well as twelve beer on draft, top notch Tequilas, Slivovitz, Pastis cocktails, Japanese Single Malt, Italian digestive and an extensive choice of bottled beer.

Barbès has performance space in their intimate back room. Why is it such a cool bar to hang out in? Well, for starters it has 20 really good beers on tap and 1 cask ale (sample listing at the bottom of the post). Just like any good bar, the selection changes on a regular basis.

Secondly, it has a outdoor beer garden (or rather a central court area where the local vampires can get a bit of color in the summer sun). This area also serves as a chemical net for stopping (or at least trimming) the amount of strollers coming to the bar by way of cigarette smoke (yes, I am an anti baby in select bars kinda guy!). Note, this is such an open bar, you won’t even notice ciggy smoke, unless your mate is sitting across from you blowing smoke in your face!

Thirdly the prices; which are freakin amazing (at the time of posting this, there happy hour included $10 pitchers and a nice selection of beers starting at $4, when happy hour finished, the price went up $1-$2).

I should also mention they have two Pinball machines, Dub pies, ATM machine (they accept credit cards and cash), great staff, WiFi access and a really cool juke box.

The Space

The space itself is unusual, and we think it is a large part of the charm. Instead of a backyard, we have a courtyard. You enter through a front room with seating, but no bar. You then go through a courtyard. Then you hit the main room, which is the actual bar. It is a bit like Vol du Nuit (AKA The Belgian Beer Bar) in Manhattan, but larger.
All of the doors and walls fold and collapse. When we were extending the main room, we fabricated steel doors that accordion closed. During nice weather it will be a straight shot from 4th all the way to the bar without a barrier in site.

The Materials

We know it’s getting old to brag about reclaimed shit, but we really went bananas. There are very few new items in the bar. We used recycled material for everything but essentials, e.g. plumbing, electrical panels, HVAC, etc. As you will see, it is pretty damn impressive. We got shit from everywhere we could and ended up with some sick wood. You just do not see wood like this.

The Beer

The beer selection will be similar to Bar Great Harry. Mostly American craft with a good chunk of local brews. We will have a few Belgian and German imports, because who doesn’t like Delirium Nocturnum or Aventinus on a chilly evening.

For those of you who are wondering about the name (yep, that included me!), the name comes from Mission San Francisco de Asís; also commonly known as “Mission Dolores” owing to the presence of a nearby creek named Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, meaning “Our Lady of Sorrows Creek.”.

Mission Dolores is the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco and the sixth religious settlement established as part of the California chain of missions. The Mission was founded on June 29, 1776, by Lieutenant José Joaquin Moraga and Father Francisco Palóu (a companion of Father Junipero Serra), both members of the de Anza Expedition, which had been charged with bringing Spanish settlers to Alta (upper) California, and evangelizing the local Indians, the Ohlone.

When passing by, you may get the impression that this is a fairly small bar, but don’t let the front part fool you, this is a long bar which opens up at the back with several nooks for chatting with friends and best of all, it has a good sized beer garden with several beer tables out back; perfect for those sunny south slope days.

There are currently 12 well priced beers on tap (Guinness, Boddingtons, Goose Island IPA, Stella Artois, Six point Sweet Action, Southern Tier Hop Sun, Blue Point Toasted Lager, Allagash White, Sixpoint IPA, Peaks, Organic Pale Ale, Brooklyn Lager and Miller Light). The bar also has a full liquor selection as well as a few wines. Keep an eye out for some seasonal surprises like the 16oz Bloody Mary, 16oz Rasberry Vodka Lemonade, 16oz Sangria (white & Red), Hot Run Cider and Dark & Stormy. This bar has to be one of the more sociable bars in Brooklyn; everyone from the the bar staff to the patrons, to the owners are all very friendly.   If you are a football (soccer) fan, then this is one of the few bars in the area that will show every Premiership game on their large screen TV (game schedule can be found on their website)

For such a new bar, the Black Horse Pub looks to be doing things right.  It has gained a loyal following in a very short time and with the constant tweaking, this is one bar that could help define the style of South Slope nightlife.

Soccer fans, get your pint-drinking hats on: Black Horse Pub is a handsome neighborhood spot filled with high pressed-tin ceilings, exposed brick and a long wooden bar, offering a full menu of English, Irish and American grub, as well as a full English breakfast when matches are on, which roughly translates to “all the live soccer you can handle” (on multiple flat screens). The Scene - Dining in Brooklyn’s outback means hoofing it to Fourth Avenue, but the walk works up an appetite for hearty Aussie grub. The bar/restaurant is split with a wooden bar and tables up front, and a spacious dining room, plus sidewalk seating to the back. Slow service works fine for the laid-back bar crowd, but can frustrate hungry diners.
The Food - What Sheep Station does best is serve beer and food without preening or pretense. One of Australia’s most famous exports, the meat pie tastes strikingly like chili. For the nibblers, there’s a mounding salad of arugula with sharp wedges of Manchengo cheese. The moist Australian barramundi gives indication of the pub’s culinary aspirations, but plump mussels lag in a nearly tasteless broth. Named for the nearby Gowanus, this tiny, homey little place is removed from the scene on Fifth Avenue or Smith Street, instead tucked away in industrial Brooklyn. The clientele is a free-flowing hodgepodge of construction workers, writers, firemen, and hipsters, and the vibe is just so gosh-darn friendly you’ll need to expect a little conversation along with your drink. The space is pretty narrow, with old-school backless bar chairs running down the length of the bar; the walls are busy with beer advertisements, a few American flags, and photos of servicemen and black-and-white New York scenes. D.J.’s spin every few weeks, there’s a pool table in the back, and the owners grill on the patio, which feels lifted straight from the suburbs.
