This limited edition bottle is a Spike Lee Collaboration.  Although Spike was not born in Brooklyn , he lives here, has made films here and considers himself a New Yorker.

The flavor is apple and ginger (I don’t get why…anyone have any clues!), although as far as flavored vodka goes, it sounds like it could be quite tasty. The bottles will be 1 liter and are the typical 80% proof.  Expect to pay around $22-$30.

Some interesting information about the new Absolut Brooklyn bottle:

• Spike Lee’s house number on the stoop depicted on the bottle’s label, no. 165, is Spike Lee’s actual address, although the street was omitted.
• Absolut has promised to donate $50,000 from the proceeds of the limited-edition bottling to Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to build affordable, green homes in Bed-Stuy.
• The bottle’s iconic Lars Olsson Smith medallion has been altered to look like Lee with glasses and a baseball cap.
• Absolut Brooklyn will be sponsoring Blogfest 2010. The Fifth Annual Brooklyn Blogfest will take place Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the Brooklyn Lyceum, located at 227 Fourth Avenue at President Street in Park Slope. Well if you put it like that!!

The act allowed for beers under 3.2 percent alcohol by weight (compared with up to 5 percent in full-strength beer) to be sold in the United States. Plenty of people felt a weak beer was better than no beer at all, so they lined up at breweries nationwide (so the story goes) to buy beer legally for the first time in 13 years. Cheers to beer and Prez Roosevelt.

Coincidentally (or maybe not?) today is also “No Housework Day.

James Watt and Martin Dickie started brewing their beer in April 2007 and have since grown their brand to include 13 beers, with the strongest and newest of them being ‘Sink The Bismarck’ coming in at a CRAZY 41% ABV!!  This was stronger than their 32% beer called Tactical Nuclear Penguin, which they had brewed not even one year previously. The way they are going, we should have a beer with a ABV of about 60% within the next couple of years.

Unlike Sam Adams Utopias, which is served up in a 30ml special sniffer glass for around $20 at the bar, Sink The Bismarck comes in a resealable 330ml bottle and is priced at £40 ($62).  But what of the taste I hear you cry!  I personally love the Sam Adams Utopias, for me, it’s an end of the night treat when I’ve just been paid.  I have not yet tried Sink The Bismarck, so unless a test case of beers magically appears on my stoop, I am going to have to wait until I am back home (my original one) in the U.K. this summer to try one.

For now, you are going to have to settle with a visual response from some cheerily cheeky Brits describing the beer by using such words as hoppie, smooth, assertive, over the top and dogs bollocks. below is the first reactions to Brew Dog’s ‘Sink The Bismarck’. These were the findings after researchers tested 100 commercial beers for silicon content and categorized the data according to beer style and source.

Previous research has suggested beer contained silicon but little was known about how silicon levels varied with the different types of beer and malting processes.

“We have examined a wide range of beer styles for their silicon content and have also studied the impact of raw materials and the brewing process on the quantities of silicon that enter wort and beer,” researcher Charles Bamforth said in a statement.

The study, published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, found the beers’ silicon content ranged from 6.4 milligrams per liter to 56.5 mg per liter. The average person’s silicon intake each day is between 20 and 50 mgs.

The researchers found there was little change in the silicon content of barley during the malting process as most of the silicon in barley is in the husk, which is not affected greatly during malting.

They found pale ales showed the highest silicon content while non-alcoholic beers, light lagers and wheat beers had the least silicon.

“Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon,” said Bamforth.

“Wheat contains less silicon than barley because it is the husk of the barley that is rich in this element.”

But Bamforth told reporters that the results shouldn’t be taken too serious. The study examined the beers but it did not look at bone mineral density or analyze patients’ data.

“I would first consider flavor and whether you like it or not,” he told science and technology magazine Discover. “Choose the beer you enjoy, for goodness sake.” – via Reuters
