Canal Bar – Gowanus, Brooklyn
Salooned.com highly recommends this bar. If your looking for a great neighborhood bar, with cheap beer, friendly and professional staff, pool table, beer garden, excellent juke box and a free popcorn machine, well, this is the place. Set back on the lessor known 3rd ave in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood, this locals bar is starting to help change peoples perception of Brooklyn’s third ave. Located just 1 block from 4th Ave & Union Street Subway (R, M), this bar is definitely worth checking out.
Check them out on Facebook and for all you Foursquare users, keep an eye open, the Canal Bar likes to reward local explorers.
Named for the nearby Gowanus, this tiny, homey little place is removed from the scene on Fifth Avenue or Smith Street, instead tucked away in industrial Brooklyn. The clientele is a free-flowing hodgepodge of construction workers, writers, firemen, and hipsters, and the vibe is just so gosh-darn friendly you’ll need to expect a little conversation along with your drink. The space is pretty narrow, with old-school backless bar chairs running down the length of the bar; the walls are busy with beer advertisements, a few American flags, and photos of servicemen and black-and-white New York scenes. D.J.’s spin every few weeks, there’s a pool table in the back, and the owners grill on the patio, which feels lifted straight from the suburbs. One of the meanest jukeboxes in the borough cranks out Sinatra and the Clash, and even your dog can come. via NYMag
